Is it possible to connect a DVD player to a TV with an analogue coaxial cable? If not, is it possible to connect the DVD player to the TV via a VCR using a coaxial cable between the TV and VCR but a SCART cable between the VCR and DVD player?

Oh yes, and you connect it just as you described. Switch the tv to the video channel and the vcr to the av. However, with macrovision protected disks you will have problems as the vcr will respond to the macrovision unless you can turn it off.
