how to split a dvd file in two

downloaded a dvd file but too big to go on a dvd how do you split the file in half
iv'e got nero but cant do it with that and dvd shrink does not recognize the file

dvd shrink should do it, what format is the file ? It should be something like video_ts, video_ts01etc for the .vob files

I'm assuming that you have a dvd9 file that you wish to split into two dvd5s (ie, 5-9 gig file to two 'normal' dvds)
I have used many different progs in the past to either shrink or split large files and the one i recommend for quality and ease is dvdfab.platinum.

As pug said, both nero and shrink will do it but now curious as to what format the files you have are in.

699mb should fit on one disc why not try a convert and burn prog like convert x or sothink dvd maker.i use convert x all the time and never have a problem

Well you have Nero so
Open nero vision
Click Make dvd
Click Add video files
When the import box opens, check if the file type box at the bottom is set to all suported video files in the drop down menu.
Just a thought. Also what is the extension at the end of the file name. eg .avi/.rm/.mov etc

699 SHOULD fit on a CD ..... but only if it's a 700Mb ..... CD
650Mb is still the Standard size.

thanks but when i open this in nero it say too big to fit on disc unless you have double sided etc and it shows on the graph well over 4 gb and cannot reduce the size when i opt for that option
i can give a screen shot if reqiured

Are you trying to burn this as a cd or dvd 'cause i think you may be using the wrong nero application by the sounds of it.
Sorry. Just twigged.
Once you've added the file and its telling you that it is too big, click on the video options box at the bottom and click on the video options tab.
In the transcoding quality box, check if the quality setting drop down box is set to automatic (fit to disc).
If it is and the file is still to big select custom in the drop down box and you will notice a figure (bit rate) appear. Reduce this figure by a small ammount and click ok. Keep on repeating this till the graph bar reduces itself into the safe area.
However the lower the bit rate the lower the quality.
Still think you're on the settings for cd or you have a cd in the drive.
Nero will transcode a lot bigger files than your's and automatically fit to disc.

i went on the long play option and copied it ok
i'm no novice with comps ,never downloaded a bittorent movie before ,i'm not on the wrong prog in nero and yes using dvd not cd
what puzzles me it's says in info and file properties it 699mb
but shows on nero that the file is 0.40 over the 4.8gb?? thank for your helpful info mate

Glad you got it sorted degs.
Without getting to complicated, the type of file you have is probabally an 'avi' (most common) file which is full dvd that has been compressed (squashed) into a smaller version using various methods so it's easier and quicker to download.
What nero does when transcoding is unsquashes the file and converts it back to dvd format.
As you're new to torrents you will find countless different formats, sizes and qualitys out there and only experience can help you with this.
If you're after quality try mininova and search aXXo a perfect copy every time.
