Last night my son phoned me to ask why I had just phoned him. I said I had not phoned him. He said his phone had rang a minute before, they did not manage to pick up in time, so they dialled 1471 to see who the caller had been. They were given my number. But I definately had not rang them! How could this happen??

There was a blip on the line that caused it to ring automatically. As no number had actually dialed them, the 1471hadn't been updated and so gave your number (presumably the last to call him).
this has been happening to us recently. the phone will ring, just once, at some ungodly time when i should be asleep. when i do 1471 it has not registered it. it kinda scares me a bit!
Are you with Talk-Talk by any chance?

We had a lot of problems with our phone ringing and when we answered the strangers at the other end claimed we called them!!
And TT still charged us for these calls.
They did have the decency to let us cancel the 18 month contract 4 months in though.
