My son wants a DVD that I can only find available on Region 1, ( I am in the UK) will we be able to play this through my computer DVD ROM, or will that be region 2 specific?

if your drive was produced after 1st jan 2000 and/or has a certain number of changes (use this to check right click on the dvd drive then select properties => the hardware tab => select the dvd drive from the menu => then properties => then dvd region it will tell you that you can change the region up to 4 times.) if this applies to you then try http://www.dvdidle.com/dvd-region-free.htm

thanks jimmyjojojr - I did this and discovered I do in fact have 4 changes of region available, he'll probably only watch the dvd once so I'll probably do this. Cheers for the help, I'd have been a long time finding that for myself!
just thought id point out that u will need dvd movie software installed on your pc tho to play it

thanks Mattk, I checked that and I can play region 2 dvds so I must have the decoder software. Cheers.

or will I need different software for region 1?
no, yr current software will still work fine.
There are also players available such as DVD-X-Player which will automatically play DVDs of any region without having to use up the 4 changes allowed on your hardware. This will enable you to buy cheaper DVDs from CD-Wow in any region format.
