Have trojandownloader.XS , spyware and malware on my computer - it's almost seized up. Have used Norton CD and antispyshield.com products on it, but to no avail. Are there any free downloadable programs from internet, please?

Personally - I'd cut my losses

by all means try spybot search and destroy

between them they will generally do a good job
(use them at least once a week)

If there is no joy there ... the secutity websites will almost certainly get there in the end ...
but it's like linux users ... they tend to loose sight of the time ... and simply rise to the challenge.

if you do have something better to do ... copy anything important to CD or DVD ... and seriously consider rebuilding.

if you've used the machine for more than a year .... and regularly visit the type of sites downloaders come from ... a fresh start is probably in order.

after all you may have something you don't know about working in the background (from what you say) - a downloader should hardly be noticeable ... after all ... that's their job!

Thank you for your advice. Unfortunately I barely understand the computer, but have been fiddling around with various sites for 4 hours, to try and mend the problems, to no avail. I'll have to get a technician in, I think.

I had the same problem bazzard, but installed Spybot S & D, and Ad-Aware. Both managed to rid my computer of some of the spyware, but unfortunately, I now have a horrible trojan thing there - SpybotDeleting. I tried to follow advice to remove it, but I'm so poorly-equipped to deal with techie stuff, that I couldn't follow the instructions. I wish there was a simple way of ridding computers of these things, without wiping the hard drive & starting again! Also - if you save stuff to disc, or to a memory stick - what happens when you put it back in? You might re-infect a clean computer????

I've spent hours using spybot and watching green coloured lines at the bottom of my screen, possibly checking every file in the whole world - I almost went mad. It is now 2 o'clock in the morning. Unfortunately it does not seem to have worked. I'm not sure how to eliminate everything on my computer, so will leave it to the experts and get charged an arm and a leg, no doubt.

Awww...probably won't come cheaply bazzard, but I think you're right. Your computer shouldn't be away for long.
When you find a trojan or whatever, google it - and it sometimes comes up with a way of getting rid of it. You'll also find various forums devoted to the subject! trouble is...I couldn't understand what they were on about!

I dont know which forums you have visited Ice Maiden, but most of us will take the time to walk the users through each step if they dont understand.
I know there are some who are short, and generally unhelpful, but Im not one of them, like many others, and I have helped a great many people clean up their machines over the years for free. I also do it in the real-world for �20 no matter how long it takes because everyone knows a technician will charge stupid money to wipe the drive.

It's funny but it's usually pc technicians who slag our forums off, purely because we are taking the �60+ they charge for the priviledge of making you start over.

On the other hand, Microsoft recognise our efforts by the fact a great many malware fighters are MVP's

In my case ... I applaud enthusiasts the world over ... in some areas I'm one myself ... but! and it's a big butt (comes of sitting round drinking tea all day).

the guys who kill viruses do a marvelous job .... but then they incorporate their hours and hours of work into a virus scanner that will do the job automatically for me in seconds.

I'm primarily a corporate - so cost and consistency is everything ... 20 mins .... no joy ... crash and burn! No arguments ... if it's vital data .. change disc burn the new ... and send the old to a recovery service.

some of my muppets can earn more in an hour than I'll earn in a year ... and for them a PC either helps them ... or if it's too much trouble ... they'll employ someone else to do the work (or use a pencil)

at home ... ok I'll go slightly further ... but in most cases ... I'll put my efforts into recovering and backing up data and then crash and burn.... because a new system is a happy system (if it's done right).

I work on the theory that a chair leg that's been glued back together is an ornament ... not a chair I'd want to put my (considerable) ass into.

PCs that have become extensively infected also tend to have been abused in other ways. sometimes by design ... but more often because people simply don't know any better. And for people who don't know better ... trawling through yards and yards of (to them) meaningless lists of files and registry entries .. is a daunting and time consuming task ... (aka a complete waste of time!!).

for those who have a mfrs disc .. it's a 20 min job ... without ... a wet Saturday .... and no danger that overlooking a registry entry could start a re spawn and back to square one.

I religiously rebuild all my machines (6 of them) every 12 months ... and for friends - unless there is good reason not to ... whenever I get the chance.

not because I'm fearful that the boffins are "stealing my business" because I'm certain at day one my machine is as clean as clean can be.

As an enthusiast - If you want to build a plane, learn to fly and then set off to spain ... fine ... I'll be there six months before you (with easy jet) waiting with drinks ... we can compare my deep tan with your white sallow back. and your blistered hands.

I'm not popping at you ... far from it ... but the reality (mine at least) is that most people just want to use their PC ... not spend hours on a board discussing the intricacies of removing whatever they've picked up.

I agree with you too, that in many cases it is easier to start afresh, and in the extreme cases the best idea (rootkits)

For me it is just a hobby though (one that keeps my unemployed a**e busy all day).

But then yesterday I had to reinstall windows, because I needed a new partition on my drive, and the installation took less than hour, but add on the other 4 hours downloading MS updates, all my programs and putting all my pictures back etc

It was painful, and Im still not done yet.
