virus i think !!

im using a sony vaio.
this week we have had a MAJOR pop up problem. ive tried everything i can think of to cure the problem.
the pop ups are opening in full page format and refuse to close 99 times out of every 100 !!!
i did have a problem with the sound and brightness but seem to have cured that.
ive got a pop up blocker on and have it set at MAXIMUM.
ive also turned up the cookie search tool to MAXIMUM.
have run a full system scan 5 times now.
ive also deleted ALL history and temp internet files.

nothing is showing a problem.... my security is McAfee and basic Microsoft..

would be more than happy to find the cause of the problem, simply because its driving me scatty now.
