Can anyone advise as to how to check if SP1 has been installed on my machine via windows update ? Ive had a look through the update history but can't see anything. I know that in XP it would normally tell you when you looked at the system information.

Check the 'Value' element of the 'Version' item. The text should read like this:
VersionNumber Service Pack 1 Build BuildNumber

SPs don't generally relate to the version number .... the bit that counts are the words service pack x tacked on to the end
MS are supposed to be using a phased install and it just might not be your turn yet
however follow chris's link and you can d/l and install manually (save the file to a mem stick or CD and do your friends a favour!)
