As a basic learner, is it necessary to have it on my computer as I don`t know what it is or how to use it, and doubt if I shall ever need to. Will it make any difference if I uninstall it?

it's optical character recognition software, assuming you have a scanner it would enable you to scan documents as editable text into a word document rather than scan them as a picture of the text.

If you don't have a scanner, or are sure you'll never need to scan text so you can edit it then uninstall it, personally id say if you have a scanner leave it just in case you ever need to use it.

is it a xerox scanner by any chance?

No gobo, it`s a printer scanner. Pixma MP170 that I scan documents and photo`s with.
