explorer error won't clear

when I start win98 I get a errror message that states " Program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down" when I clear this nessage it just re-appears over and over again. Because of this I cannot get into windows 98. This happens in safe mode as well. Can anyone help???

When your PC is booting into Windows, after the dos drivers have loaded (black screen/white text) hold down the shift key until the desktop has loaded. See if this works. If so try and identify the program causing the error and uninstall it or run msconfig and click the startup tab and uncheck the box next to this program to stop it loading.
