Shortly after I've switched the tv on the picture shrinks down to about 5" accross the middle of the screen, & after a while it suddenly comes right again. Does this sound like an expensive repair job? ( I like to have a vague idea so I don't get ripped off !) It's a 28" Sanyo.

Sounds like the tube has gone or is going. if thats the case, then it will be cheaper to buy a new TV.
Nothing to do with the tube - it's a field time base fault. Could just be a dry joint; could be an IC or other component failing. Either way, not hugely expensive to put right, although labour will add a fair bit, of course. My guess is the repair itself would only be a few pounds at most.

Thanks for replies - think I'll go with your optimistic answer cooler. If I can blind the repair man with your science then he won't be able to treat me like the blonde that I am!
