Slow Broadband
9 Answers
For the last month, my BT broadband service has been really slow, with the tested download speed half the upload speed.
I am using a linksys router, which is less than two weeks old, as I replaced my old one. BT have tested the telephone circuits in the house, which are ok.
The reported speed on my router is just under 6Mb, but my tested speed (my PC is directly connected to the router) is rubbish.
What could be causing this?

First thing is to try a different ADSL filter on the socket the router is plugged into as the ones supplied by the ISP are always cheap nasty ones and do fail quite often, if that doesn't work and If it is possible to do so plug the router into the master socket and see if that improves things, if it does then it's your internal wiring thats at fault.
When you plug into the master socket, if you look at the socket there is two screws on the front, undo these and gently pull the faceplate towards you and it should come off and you will se another socket behind it, use this if possible as thats the test socket.
If it's still slow when plugged into the master socket get back onto BT and give them more grief.

No homehub because I was already on option 3 before they started giving them away free, if I want one now, I have to pay for it.
The issue has now been resolved. Using the BR broadband speedtest gave an IP throughput of 128Kbps, when it should have been in the region of 4500 to 5000 Kbps. In effect BT had slowed down my speed, much like trying to fill a bath with a dripping tap.
They merely had to increase the IP throughput to return my speed to its previous level.
