My brother in law had to reconnect the phone in their new house but the wires were cut of at the wall.He connect the 2 wires that were hanging loose and got a dialing tone,so he can dial out.But nobody can phone in as the phone does not ring.Any ideas????

did he use a proper master socket? they are not the same as a normal wallbox as they have a capacitor in them, without that the ring won't work.
This is what it should look like -

Connect the two wires to 'A' & 'B' terminals, and it will work as a sole socket.

Run extension wiring, if required, from the 4- or 6-way strip.

Standard colours are

2 Blu/Wh
5 Wh/Blu
3 Or/Wh
4 Wh/Or
