I downloaded a film and it saved onto my PC as an AVI file and it is 700MB in size. If I was to put this film onto a DVD how big would it be on the disk? I've noticed that ordinary blank CDs are 700MB in size but I've got a blank DVD and it is 4.7GB. If the film is 700MB on AVI(whatever that means) will it also be 700MB on a DVD?

a 4.7gb dvd will hold a 2hr movie, but by using compression software i have been told you can get 2 2hr movies on a dvd,tho i don`t know for sure as i have`nt tried it myself.avi is a file format that you can watch on your pc,but to put it onto a dvd so you can play on your dvd player you will need a conversion programme like sothink dvd maker (google for it its free) which will convert the avi file into dvd format and burn it to disc for you.
