I have been taking my laptop with me on my travels - however I do not like accessing open broadband connections and sometimes the cost of a connection (in airports) can be extortionate - is there anyway I can buy anything that would enable me to connect here in the UK and abroad?

Yes, a mobile broadband internet dongle. Not cheap to use abroad though

Ethel, your answer is quite interesting. Ilive in Spain, I have a laptop with broadband and a router. My wife has to be in the same room as me otherwise she doe not pick up the Internet connection from the router. Your answer to deedee9 made me think, although expensive, a dongle might be a good idea for my wife, plus the fact that she often travels. I phoned Vodafone and the knew nothing about it. I must presume that the dongle+contract is only available in UK.

squad - I spend some time in Tenerife and lack of broadband is frustrating.

I have discussed the possibility of buying such a dongle while I'm there and using it on pay as you go with Legend, the AnswerBank user who lives in Tenerife.

He tells me it is unavailable there and in Spain. Very disappointing.

Ethel, if there was broadband in Tenerife, could you take your UK registered dongle and us it in Tenerife.
Same applies to legion, could he buy a dongle in the UK, set up a contract with say vodafone UK, pay with direct debit to a UK bank, have it sent to Spain and use it there?
