will my handheld tv be useless after the 2012 switchover are there any digital addons or ways around this or will i have to throw it away ?

Its possible to adapt,but the end result would scarcely qualify as "hand held" With an RF adapter you could provide the set with a scart socket, and via this you could connect a digital boxThe whole set up would be bulky and almost certainly require a good external aerial.
If you have a digital camera,or a security camera you may be able to use the set as a monitor, depending on the set having an AV input.
