blocking private calls and knowing who they are

You can your telephone service to reject anonymous calls.

Also report malicious calls to them if they are of a serious enough nature.

If its on your landline, you can get a service called call barring...you have to pay for it but its only a matter of a few quid a quarter, as soon as the person rings you just pick the phone up and punch in a code..voila theyre barred, it doesnt matter wether they ring from phoneboxes either, you can still barr it

My phone shows the numbers calling, so I dont answer 'withheld' numbers and leave them to the 1571 ansafone. Withdrawn numbers are usually from friends/relations abroad.

Withheld numbers are often from switchboards ie hospital/council but they can leave messages.

I'm with BT and I asked them if they did a service which blocks private/withheld numbers, it's 4.99 a quarter but well worth it as now I don't get the annoying silent calls and when you speak you get connected to some pillock from Delhi wanting to sell you insurance or a new phone....

my home phone number is withheld because I like to choose who knows my number. I have a friend who has blocked withheld numbers, and it gets mighty expensive calling her from my mobile.
