Formatting memory cards

I bought a Canon PowerShot SX100 and a SanDisc 2GB memory card. The first few pages of the manual explain how to insert the batteries and memory card, and other basic information. Then about 50 pages later there is a section on "formatting the memory card". Is it important that I do this?

If the card you won't work without formatting, yes.

Otherwise don't bother.

No, but should the memory card become corrupted such that the camera does not recognise it (it has happened to me), formatting the card can overcome this problem.

You can also format the card by connecting it to your PC via a card reader and using the computer�s format options.

Thanks to both of you. You both say 'no' so I aint doing it. 224 pages of formidable instructions.................think I'll dig out all my old SLR film-camera equipment!!:)

if it's at the back of the book .... it''s far more enticing than if it was at the front and in your face .....

remember when you were young .... people advised against doing any and everything that turned out to be worth doing and fun.......

actually they are right .... when the card is full ... transfer the files ... either move or copy and then delete to empty the card - rather than formatting.
(you still want to though .... don't you?)

Hi, Ace. I think I do want to laugh; but at myself! I really don't think I'm stupid..........could be changing my mind about that......but I'm really having a hard time with this instruction book, For example, how the hell do I know what pixel range I should set the camera at? I have a suspicion that in this case bigger isn't necessarily better; however, back to the tome:)

Bigger most certainly isn't better
2-4 is probably about optimum for snaps.

If you want part of a big landscape , intend to enlarge past a4 or will edit the photo extensively... go bigger.

problem is about the same either way .... if you have too many or too few pixels ... enlarging or shrinking distorts.

rather than reading the book .... use the camera ... when you think why .... hit the book

If you can do photos ... the camera will follow ... any idiot can learn to press buttons .... making a picture ... now that needs talent

Hello again Ace. I like your attitude: do it and see what happens. I still have this instinctive behaviour to place the camera to my eyeball (SLR memories) when taking a picture. I agree with you: anyone can take a picture :however, to create a meaningful image is a blessing: f/8 and be there.
