Our washing machine is leaving brown oiley type stains that cannot be removed, particularly white cotton items. as anyone come across this type of problem before?

When that happened to me, it was the bearings that had gone. Oil on the clothes is usually a sign of expensive problems with the motor, sorry.
Mrs Vicasso had a similar problem. It turned out that there was nothing wrong with the machine, but she always used a low temperature 30 degree wash and there had been a gradual build-up of detergent and dirt in the folds of the rubber door seal.
Run a cloth around in the rubber seal folds. If there is dirt there, wipe off as much as you can and then try a high temperature wash to remove the residue. Hope this helps :-)
