I've got the same setup as you, milton - my PCs' DVD burner does not read DVD-RAM disks so I'm going to replace my slave CD-ROM with a DVD-ROM that reads DVD-RAM, then I can copy from one to the other to create player compatible DVDs.
I picked up an LG rewriter drive on Ebay for about 40 - it supports all 5 dvd formats including RAM. I also have the panasonic dvd recorder, and use an excellent (and simple) piece of software called TMPGEnc DVD Author to backup from dvd-ram to dvd-r.
