Most providers give a free voicemail service. BT's is the 1571 service I think. Check with your service provider.

If you have call waiting, there are some bits of software that will alert you via your PC. This may happen as a "pop-up" with some, so if you have a pop-up killer running, you may need to keep an eye on it's alerts. (Obviously you will need to go offline to take the call). Hmmmm... couldn't find many for you (probably because the price of Broadband isn't much more than dial-up these days).
