A friend wishes to download Radio 4 programmes that he misses and play them in his car when going on long journeys, he is not really interested in music. Does he need an MP3 player or an i pod ? Thank you for your answers in advance.

An iPod is just a brand of mp3 player.

It's like saying that your friend wants a device to suck up dirt --- should he get a vacuum cleaner or a Hoover?

Anything will do for this purpose.

Your issue will be with the radio4 programmes themselves. To my knowledge, BBC's streams are designed to not be freely available. If they're played via iPlayer, they might be not easily downloadable. And if they are, it may be less easy to convert to mp3.
Podcasts are freely available your friend need to go to the programme website directly such as those below.

A podcast is a downloadable recording of the progamme, rather than a stream which is what iplayer uses.
if it's not available - you could use audacity to record the output of the speakers

As a yorkshireman and all round cheapskate if that's all he needs I'd go for something like this

it's loud enough either with headphones or a radio thingy ... it's ugly ... leave it in the car and no one would be stupid enough to break in to nick it
