Can I purchase an 'over the counter' mobile phone without giving provider/retailer my home address (or made-up on for that matter) - Thanks, BB (ps Please idiot proof your answers as I've not had a phone before!)

yes

(don't get a lot more idiot proof than that :))
Yes. You need ...

(1) a handset (you can get one for about 20-30

(2) A SIM card (slots into the handset and links it up to Vodafone, Orange, T Mobile, or whoever) which costs 5

(3) Calling credit (you just buy "calling time" which you then load on to you phone).
As you've not had a phone before, I guess you are either ...

1. Under 8 years of age, or

2. An extraterrestrial, newly arrived from a distant galaxy.

Either way, I hope you could understand our answers.

not everyone has a mobile surgically implanted!!
(although sometimes on the train I'm tempted to give it a go!)

I still don't have a personal mobile phone ... I have to have one for work ... but when I go out I don't carry one.

I value my privacy ... and when in the company of others would feel rude "just getting this"

and I certainly don't feel the need to send or receive a constant barrage of texts saying
I'm putting my left foot in front of the other ....
... now the right one is going forward

then waiting for acknowledgement that I'm a clever boy for being able to walk and ignore my surroundings at the same time

Rather than being from another planet I like to interact with the one I'm on

(Yup I hate mobiles)
