i recently received a humax foxsat HD freesat box,can i use an ordinary digital tv recorder in conjunction with this to record programmes(not necessarily in HD)?

If you mean a PVR then no as most PVRs record digital trerrestrial via the aerial and don't have a scart input or line input.
If you mean a DVD recorder or VCR then yes as they will both have a line input either via scart or possibly hdmi.
The Foxsat box has both Hdmi and Scart outputs so recording in standard def will be possible.
To record in HD you will need a Bluray HD recorder which are not yet avaiable.
