Computer virus. How can i get rid?

My computer has recently slowed almost to a standstill and clearly has some sort of virus. I don't know much about these things. Can anyone please tell me if there is something I can do to get rid of the problem without going to great expense. Many thanks.

do a system restore....its in start, all programme, assessories, system tools????
