Since I installed AVG my desktop has run considerably slower. Is there a conflict between between the virus checking and validation and what needs to be done so that the power of both Windows and AVG security are not lost?

Smirking slightly at "the power of windows"

But that aside,

Did you seriously have no anti-virus software on your computer before? anti-virus software is one of the main constant loads that effects most peoples computers, it will slow it down a little, how much differs between each bit of AV software, as does the cost and effectiveness of each bit of software,

AVG is good for it's cost (free) but it's not the lightest bit AV software and does slow things down a bit, you can help this a fair bit by turning off the resident scan and just making sure you run a full system scan every few days when you not using it.

there are other decent AV solutions about that are a lot lighter but as effective (or more so) than avg for a cost, karpasky is meant to be about the best at the moment.

Just a small spelling misake in Chuck's post:

"karpasky" should have been spelled "Eset NOD32"
LOL I nearly wrote another paragraph about NOD but couldn't be bothered... very tired :)
AVG doesn`t seem to slow my computer down, apart from when it`s actually doing a scan. I set it to scan each day at a time when I`m unlikely to be using the computer.
If I want to use at the same time,I stop the scan and run it later.
