New digibox (part one)

Hi, I have a problem which I wonder if anyone can make suggestions to resolve it. I have a digibox and a DVD/VCR recorder. Up to last week I had no problems. I was able to record programmes from the digital channels with subtitles on. This was great, because I am hard of hearing, while my wife has very good hearing, so we were able to watch recorded programmes with the sound turned down and with the subtitles on, so we were both happy. Last week the digibox went on the blink, so I replaced it with one I had bought second-hand a few months ago. The digibox worked fine, but the DVD/VCR recorder would only record the analogue channels, and as you may know, you cannot record subtitles on the analogue channels, Please see later question, as I am running out of space
