Some European countries recommend to test for microwave leakage from an oven every three years, but in the UK the risk is considered to be so low that there are no official recommendations for periodic testing.
Testers for microwave leakage are widely available, at widely varying prices. You can find one of the cheapest here.

there are all sorts of horror stories - contact welded to eyes ... exploding eggs, (exploding cats!!)
and it certainly didn't do that gremlin any good (mind you neither did the blender).
I do take a couple of important precautions when cooking with them
rule one ... the most important to my way of thinking ...
get the wife to do everything in the kitchen especially the cooking
... hot water can be quite dangerous too .... so make sure she tests the water before she does the washing up.
number two ... always get home just as the meal is being put out ... even if it means sitting in the pub until chucking out time .... this avoids residual radiation.
