Don't know about Word 2003, but in other versions of word I've used there is an inbuilt equation editor.

Click where you want to insert the equation.
On the Insert menu, click Object, and then click the Create New tab.
In the Object type box, click Microsoft Equation.

Mark the number and go to format font then choose subscript likewise for x squared choose superscript.

Thanks to you both, much appreciated. Damn science homework

For m I type Alt+178, m = Alt+179

In your toolbar there should also be an insert symbol function, but you can also type it and use superscript font instead.  Good luck with the homework.
