I want to wall mount an LCD TV screen above an inglenook fireplace, which has a small/medium sized woodburner fitted. How much heat can an LCD screen cope with?

If you still have the spec sheet that came with it, it should say on that.

Note. I haven't bought the screen yet, so don't have a spec sheet

If you want a long life LCD screen I wouldn't recommend it regardless what the spec says purely on the fact in the long term exposure to heat will warp the plastic screen and may damage the internal electronics.

On my laptop manual it advises no to close the screen after long period of operation, let it cool for at least 10min (bearing in mind heat emission is barely negligible).

i think youd be asking for trouble, to be honest. are you sure you couldnt place it anywhere else?
