Laptop won't power off

I have a laptop with a peculiar problem.

Everytime I go start > shutdown, the laptop hibernates instead.

This only started when a friend selected shutdown then immediately closed the lid.

Have checked all the obvious things, like power settings in control panel and cannot for the life of me work out why it's doing this.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Hi Person...

Yes, it's on Vista.

teedee...

Unfortunately, the laptop only gives me the option to system restore from up to a week ago and I would need to go back quite a long time before that.
if it's vista ... that's what it's meant to do ...

Hi AC - thanks for that - I've tried it though and the computer is still sleeping/hibernating - the power light still flashes when the PC is supposed to be switched off anyway, so I'm presuming that's what it's doing.

The only way that I can get it to power off completely is by pressing and holding the power button for a few seconds, which is fine occasionally, but I don't want to have to do that everytime as I think I'm right in saying that it isn't great for the PC?

Thanks for everyone's help so far!!
