Slow delivery of text messages

Why is it I can send texts from my phone (vodaphone) to a friend (who is with orange) and most of the time they get delivered straight away, but quite often it takes anything up to one and a half hours to be delivered?

It`s like `Rush Hour` sometimes especially when there is a slow TV night like to-night. You just have to wait in a queue as the lines get overcrowded.
