CD spinning but no sound???
5 Answers
Hi All,
My nan's CD player has stopped working. It is a portable one and has a radio and cassette player too. Both the radio and cassette player work fine but for some reason, when you put a CD in and you press play the CD spins as if it is playing but no noise is coming out. I have checked that the volume is up and it is switched to CD mode but still no joy. The sound is definitely working as the radio can be heard and so can the tapes, any ideas??
Thank you

If you want to try cleaning properly, get a q tip and soak it in tape head cleaner solution or isopropyl alcohol from a chemist. gently clean the lens.
however, if the disc is spinning, then there is probably focus lock but the sled could be jammed. I have also seen this problem caused by a bad laser diode, which means the unti is probably Beyond Economical Repair.
One question though: does the cd read the disc contents (i.e can you navigate through the tracks?)

If it is reading the discs ok, and spinning /playing, then the laser can probably be ruled out as the cause. However, faults like these are hard to fix without knowledge and the schematic diagram, unfortunately.
Is the source selector a manual (clunky!) switch, or electronic , i.e. do you press a button to select between cd/rad/cassette?
Another tech I know once had a similar problem to yours with a portbale with an electronic selector. It turned out to be a chip in the unit which had got corrupted somehow, and was not selecting the sources properly.
