Is it true is someone calls me from abroad to the Uk on my mobile I get charged for the call

You won't get charged if anyone rings you whilst you are in this country and they are elsewhere.  The only time you will be charged for incoming calls is when you are 'roaming' or abroad yourself (i.e. you are not in your country of origin - the place where your mobile operator is based).

Sproutstick is perfectly correct. I live in Thailand but keep my UK mobile ready for when I visit the UK. Never switch it on unless I want to make my obligatory 6 monthly call to maintain my service. Don't want someone phoning me by accident and me paying one pound for a wrong number!
