Depends on what you mean by photo editing. If you mean just taking the red eye out of family photos or cropping them there's a host of software, free and not so free.

If you mean doing a lot more than that then there's GraphicConverter (free or shareware I think) or PhotoShop (more intuitive perhaps but very expensive) that I would recommend.
IPhoto does quite a lot, and is probably already on your mac, GIMP is free and much more detailed (like photoshop CS3)..
I have both iPhoto and Photoshop, but but only need iPhoto most of the time
