what bits r best

I have a panasonic 32 inch hd lcd tv and a Virgin media cable box ,old Toshiba dvd player all interconnected through my ,quite basic but good sounding ,hi fi . I would like to store all my cd music on some sort of hard drive recorder that could also record the cable tv and the built-in Freeview of the tv . What are the options open to me . I don,t mind changing the dvd player but don,t really want aVirgin Hd box .
