Direct bank transfer?

Not sure if that's what it is called ..... transferring cash online, from your bank account to someone else's.

I did this the other day and was surprised how straightforward it is.

Do any ABers use this facility, and am I right in thinking there is no charge?

And is it a safe way to transfer cash to somebody?

Yes, I've used it often, to transfer money to my daughter's account, it works perfectly and costs nothing, just wish she wasn't so rubbish with money!

So much easier than sending a cheque!

I use it all the time. A lot of my regular eBay customers pay this way - it keeps the costs down.
