Toolbars for Windows XP home edition

I have a new Sony Vaio V1 and it has Microsoft XP Home office 2004. When I open Word there appears to be only two toolbars I can use and I often need pencil and eraser and Word pad is even less useful as I nee to amend charts. I can't find merge cells either, I have searched the machine and cannot find any other or any drop down menu .
