has anybody ever heard of anyone providing a service whereby they come to your house and "sort out" your pc for a (reasonable) fee?

Open up the yellow pages under computer maintenance and services and you will find many people willing to help. However, whether they are reasonably priced only they could tell you. Try friends and work colleagues, you may be surprised at the wealth of 'free' knowledge out there. I have also sorted out some serious problems using my PC manufacturers and windows web sites. Depending what your problem is depends on the level of 'sorting out' you need and whether it is worth calling in a 'business solution'.
Also, check your local (free) papers. A lot of the people who offer this service already work for maintenance firms, as I do, and are just earning a bit of extra money. Be aware though that some of these will overcharge if they think they can get away with it. By that I mean if they think that you don't know what they are doing they will make the job sound more complicated than it really is. Most of the problems encountered by home users are easily rectified by an engineer and should not be very expensive.
