don't think can get it free, but if you subscribe to the basic sky package (no movies/sports) its a lot cheaper than the full all in package.

Sky keep it quiet, but apparantly you can now get a non-subscription package carrying about 200 channels for a one off payment of 150.

  • I can't find it on the sky website, but these people sell unsubsidized Sky Boxes, I would give them a ring and ask them about it. http://www.simplydigital.co.uk/

And you can buy this at Dixons - so I assume in other electrical stores to.

I'm probably just confirming what you already know farm but as far as I can see the cheapest package that gives you UKTV Food on Sky is the Family Pack which costs 19.50 a month (half price for the first 3 months with free installation at the moment).  It's not available on freeview anyway & even if you were cabled its the same monthly subscription.

The problem you have is that UKTV Food is not a freebie.  It's packaged with loads of other crap because they know that you would never buy most of the other channels if each had a seperate subscription charge.  Bundling them all up 'justifies' the higher price.

Essentially, that's how these companies make their money.  (In my opinion though not as extortionate as the BBC & their TV licence.  For terrestrial viewers it works out to be approx 10 a month for just 2 channels. For that 19.50 a month the Sky Family Pack gives you over 200 channels...)

There are two options that can work. Option 1, get a job in UKFOOD. As a perk you'll get the station for free, that is assuming you have a sat link. this leads me to Option 2. Work for SKY themselves and get everything for free. hope this helps.
dunno about subscription etc, read the oteher posts on that.. However, as far as the hardware is concerned, you can pick up secondhand sky digiboxes (often by grundig or amstrad) for as little as a fiver, and a used sattelite dish for similar, check small ads in local press and flea markets, boot sales etc. I got a working second system for the bedroom this way. Admittedly, you need to know a bit about how to wire it up.....
