Whenever I boot up my computer there are always a couple programmes which automatically run in the back ground which I dont always use. Is there a way to choose what runs and what doesnt run automatically?

Go to Start->Run and type in "msconfig", this may bring up a utility where you can select which programs run on startup.  This depends on your OS.

If is returns a file not found message you can download the exe here:

Or there are many shareware / freeware programs that will do the same thing.

^^ WinPatrol is one of them. Also check your Startup folder (Start menu > All Programs) for anything you don't want to be in there.
Spyboty search and destroy has a good feature to tell you and allow you to change what runs at startup, plus its an extemely good resource for many things ontop of this and spyware protection.
