I am getting desperate here as I can hardly see - how can I darken icons at top for example

File Edit View Favorites Tools Help - they are nearly fading away

This sounds like your monitor is the problem, not the computer settings? Have you tried adjusting the buttons on it? My monitor actually went all faded just before it died, so it could be maybe that it is on its way out.

thanks scarlett but the guy who fixed it this week sold it to me about a year and half ago would have told me I had a problem. I will keep on and work things out ie control panel etc.
