default storage for picture files
7 Answers
Can I tell my lappy that I want the default storage place for picture files to be an external hard drive?
(assuming it's connected, obviously)
So when I click "Save picture as" ...
Instead of suggesting the "Pictures" folder ...
... it goes straight to the external drive.
Help appreciated as always.

"My Pictures" is a sub-folder of "My Documents" and you can move your entire documents folder to a different location, but not just one sub-folder that's within it.
In any case, not all software will default to using your Pictures directory for saving pictures - it really depends on the particular software you are using. Some programs will remember the last location and simply suggest it the next time you save, other will suggest folders specific to the particular application.
If you want to move your entire documents folder, you can do it as follows:
Open Windows Explorer
Locate "My Documents" and right-click it
Choose Properties
On the target tab, click "Move"
Locat a folder (or the root) on your external drive, and click OK.
