My old sat dish is still on the outside wall, with wiring leading to the outside of the living room where I cut it off when I stopped getting sky.
Can I wire the cable to a lcd tele with freeview in it and get a picture or is there some way I can use the dish and cable to get freesat??
Sorry I am a total novice but any advice how use the system would be greatly appreciated.

You will not get Freeview from a Sky Dish as this is received via your Rooftop aerial.
You should replace the old Cabling from the Dish and if you require Freesat you will either have to pay a one off Payment to Sky or to the BBC/ITV

Take a look here
As Redman indicates, Freeview and (both versions of ) Freesat are completely different systems, broadcasting on different frequencies and requiring different equipment to receive them.

To get Freeview you'll need a good quality terrestrial aerial. To get (the BBC/ITV version of) Freesat you'll need (after replacing the cable) to connect the dish to a suitable Freesat box.

Your cheapest (satellite-based) option is to buy a Sky box (for about 20) on eBay and get a viewing card for 'Freesat from Sky' (which is different to Freesat), for just under 20, from Sky.

Rather annoyingly both Sky and the BBC/ITV do a service called Freesat.

The Sky service uses a Sky dish and box. There is a one off payment to get it fitted (if you have not got the dish or box already) but no monthly fee. More here

The BBC/ITV service can also use the Sky dish but you have to buy a BBC/ITV freesat box. There is no monthly fee. More here:

Note that the channels available on each service are different.
