Firefox plug in problems

I have got a brand new laptop and have installed Firefox as my preferred browser, but whenever I use it a message sits at the top of the page saying that I need the Adobe Flash plug in. I then try to download the plug in but I get a message saying that I cannot download it whilst Firefox is open (bizarre). How on earth can I download the plug in without using Firefox. I then thought I would try and do it using IE, but then I can only download the IE compatible version and not the Firefox version.

Please can someone advise how I download the plug in or get rid of this plug in message.

Is there a shortcut on your desktop from the download starting? Or the beginnings of the download in your download menu. If so, restart them by double clicking with Firefox closed and it should work. I think this is how I got round it before. That or I clicked save instead of run, then started the install with Firefox closed.

I remember I found a way round it, but I can't remember the exact details
