When I get my films processed at Boots I always have the photos put on CD as well, but the photo files are far too huge to send to friends etc by e-mail. Can anyone suggest a simple (I am a technological idiot) way of making them smaller? Thanks.

have you thought of making  a web site for your photos and let your friends see them that way then they can store them on their own computer?

If you have any photo-editing software, check for an option called "optimize". This will cut the file size at the expense of quality, though if you do it carefully, the quality drop will not be easy to spot.

If you don't have any software that does this, try Irfanview. It's free, and will allow you to easily cut the physical size of your photos, which will cut the file size. http://www.irfanview.com/

Save the files as jpg rather than bmp, consider resizing them if they're very large and if you find an option to "reduce colour depth" then this will sacrifice quality for file size.
also...look for a program caled Slowview this can reset the quality depending on how you seefit + it can save to many dif file types so the compression can be changed when doing so
