But some flatscreens have normal computer monitor inputs on them, if so you can connect to that I reckon, but firstly, how many holes has the "serial" connector got, and is it blue by any chance?

easiest way - tuck it under your arm ... go to shop - put laptop on counter ... say the magic words ... I want a cable to connect this to a telly ....
hand over money - go home - connect to telly
easy when you think about it ...
saves cryptic ... all the usual ..
and the dreaded not sure about ....
because anyone who really wanted to know would take the time to look at something that was in the room ... wouldn't they?

the aerial one as you call it is probably a composite video and can be run through any TV with a scart socket (or a composite input)
The serial one is a vga monitor port the same as you'd find on the back of a desktop computer, if your TV has a matching port then you can use a standard VGA monitor cable.
Both the above only do video, you will also need a cable for the sound.
this would do it using the composite

this using the VGA

the VGA is a 10Meter one so it's quite pricey, shorter ones would be cheaper
