On my last dozen or more thumbnails I can look at the monitor and see photos of my grandson but when I enlarge an individual one a different photo to the thumbnail appears This is because I have over written these last few.Is there any way that I can separate them to keep them all??? Thanks

I may be wrong here, but every camera I have seen that would require you to do two separate steps, delete the photos, and then reset the numbering.
If so, why not just delete the photos from the camera but do not reset the numbering, then it will never overwrite old photos when you copy new ones.

I'm useless at organising - but I date every "download"
june09, or Summer 09 that way things stay manageable - and no risk of doing what you did
as for recovering - you could tru undelete prog
but if you can see the thumbnails - probably the best you can do is to press prt scrn
open paint - and paste the screenshot into that
you could then try the filmstrip option which might work - or might regenerate the thumbs.db file ... which will get rid forever
