I have been invited to buy a registry power cleaner for £17.99. Am tempted because of frequent freezes for no apparent reason. Is it worth it?

No!

registry cleaners are at best a waste of money, at worst will destroy your system!

the registry is a very complex thing, how could one bit of software possibly know what is meant to be in the registery for every single computer in the world.

Stay away from registry cleaners, if you want to clear temp files etc from your system use this, it's free and one of the only cleaners I trust.

There's plenty of free ones around and some people will probably tell you that none are necessary.

If you don't already have it, then the simplest way to backup your registry is using ERUNT http://erunt.en.softonic.com/ - as part of the backup, it creates a program erdnt.exe which restores the registry from that backup. It's the simplest registry backup/restore utility without depending on system restore points.
NEVER buy a piece of software you are offered on the web.

Some are virues or spyware and can cause terrible problems on your computer, others may be scams trying to steal your credit card details.

Personally I think registry cleaners are a con and a waste of money.

I have never run a registry cleaner and never felt the need to.

Cleaning out your registry is not going to stop your freezes, having a few unwanted lines in your registry will not cause computer freezes.
