mobile phones mystery

Call me Mr. Thicko but I don't know for sure how mobile phones work, (even after looking up a site called 'how things work') my query is quite simple really. Does the signal from my phone, bounce directly off a sattelite? or does it go via a phone mast to another phone mast? Or perhaps it bounces off a mast to a sattelite to a phone mast? Who knows?
