Hi
I have a Maxtor 250Gb One touch ext HD that I need to get rid of, and would like to clear all the files that it has stored. Problem is, the software is included on the drive (no CD came with it) and I don't want to lose this part. Is there an easy way to format the HD without losing the software ? Reason for this is that I want to sell it on - just got a Network ext HD to replace it. Any help would be greatly apreciated.

So copy the software from the external drive to your hard disk (make sure you copy any hidden files)

Then format the hard drive, then copy the files back.

Note: Formatting a hard drive does not actually remove ALL traces of files and it is possible (with the right software) to recover old data. If you really want to clear the drive use a tool to write rubbish all over the drive hundreds of times.

Dban can do it, though I have not used it for a while

You can't partially format a disk: format it, lose everything.
However, you can download replacement software from the Maxtor site: http://tinyurl.com/2yakm4
